MyPad FAQ

What is MyPad?

MyPad offers adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities a significant discount to lease townhomes or condominiums in beautiful locations near transit.

What are the requirements to qualify?

A diagnosed intellectual or developmental disability diagnosed before age 21 is required.

How it is different from a group home?

Participants either live alone or with a roommate, but there is no onsite staff. They are responsible for tending to their own needs, shopping, cleaning, and financial responsibilities.

How much does it cost?

Rents are reduced significantly. This usually results in rents that are 35%-50% reduced from the market rate. All properties are individually priced based on area and amenities.

Is the renter required to pay HOA fees?

No, these are covered by MyPad as part of the lease agreement.

Who is responsible for paying the utilities?

The utilities are split in half (where there is a roommate) and billed by Makom. Renters are responsible for water, gas (where applicable), electricity. These invoices are paid by the organization and then invoiced to the renter. This prevents any accidental disconnections due to oversight.

What if I get sick?

We have a full clinical team with a 24-hour nurse available to call for advice and recommendations.

How are roommates chosen?

MyPad puts a great deal of effort into making the best possible match. Each prospect is interviewed regarding how they wish to live, work schedule, basic interests, and needs.

How long does it take to be placed?

This varies depending on the market. Some individuals can be placed in one month, others have waited over 9 months.

Is this simply a leasing program?

Yes and no. We provide monthly social activities for all participants at no charge. Some of our previous activities include game night, paint and sip, karaoke, rock climbing, bowling, mini golf. Makom also provides many social events for the entire organization and MyPad participants receive invitations via email to these events, as well.

Are the properties furnished and move-in ready?

Each participant is responsible for providing their own furnishings. All MyPad sites are thoroughly inspected and prepared prior to leasing.

What if something breaks or the toilet overflows?

There is a 24-hour property management company that will respond to emergencies within 24 hours. Less urgent repairs are likely to take 48 hours.

Are support services provided?

All participants may have drop in or overnight drop-in services from the provider of their choice.

Do you accept HOC vouchers for rent?

Yes, we work in partnership with the HOC and accept vouchers.

Are you a national organization?

We are a local nonprofit, and currently our homes are primarily located in Montgomery County, Maryland. A few clients have relocated from other areas to take advantage of all Montgomery County has to offer. We are planning to grow and move into other regions soon.
